Minerals in StarCraft II function similarly to their StarCraft counterparts. Mineral fields return only five minerals at a time, however; the decrease is to compensate for improved pathfinding in units. As a result, worker units spend far less time actually mining the minerals, so more workers are necessary to mine a field at full efficiency. Furthermore, StarCraft II introduced high-yield minerals -- golden mineral fields that return boosted amounts of ore.
