The World Trade Center Transportation Hub ‘Oculus NYC'developed by Santiago Calatrava, is conceived at block stage as a freestanding framework located on axis along the southern side of the "Wedge of Light" plaza. As described in Daniel Libeskind's master arrange for the site, the Plaza is bounded by Fulton, Greenwich and Church Roads to the North, West and East respectively and System 3 to the south. It hyperlinks the procession of green, metropolitan areas that expand along Park Strip from Town Corridor Park to St. Paul's churchyard, to the gardens of the WTC Memorial and Battery Park across the Hudson River.
The curved, elliptical design – the Oculus NYC – is approximately 350'long, 115'across at their biggest place and rises to a level 96'above grade at its apex. The structural steel ribs that sort the Oculus extend upward, like outspread wings, to make a pair of canopies that rise to a maximum level of 168'over grade. Access into the Oculus NYC is presented through two entrances positioned at the east and west nodes of the building's central axis at Church and Greenwich Roads respectively. The entrances open onto symmetrical step landings with round glass elevators. Out of this level, guests descend approximately 22'to the Upper Concourse level where in actuality the elliptical interior space opens to their complete dimensions (approx. 400'x 216'), and where visitors have usage of the MTA 1, Dhge and Elizabeth train lines, Towers 2, 3 and 4, as well as retail galleries.
From the Upper Concourse, guests descend still another 20'via escalators, elevators and stairs to the Concourse level. That level is the main retail stage in the Hub and presents pedestrian associations to the Fulton Road Transit Center to the east, the PATH Hall and Brookfield Place to the west, and Liberty Street to the south. From the Concourse level – 160'below the top of the 330'long Oculus operable skylight – guests will have the ability to appear up at a column-free, apparent span. Even though suggestive of motifs from several traditions (the Byzantine mandorla, the wings of cherubim above the Ark of the Covenant, the sheltering wings on Egyptian canopic urns), the form might be summed up, relating to Calatrava, by the picture of a chicken launched from a child's hands.
Oculus NYC: The MTA 1 Range bisects the website below Greenwich Street. West of the 1 Range and 8'under the Concourse stage, readers occur at the Mezzanine stage, that will be dominated by the 65,000 sf PATH Hall. The 290'long vaulted steel ribs course 35'above the floor promoting the WTC Memorial gardens above. Across the northern side of the Mezzanine stage, below Fulton Road, the 325'extended West Block Concourse attaches the Hub to Brookfield Place. The vaulted bones over the concourse rise 30'above the rock floor and are an extension of the PATH Hall structure. People moving through the PATH Corridor descend 15'to the four 550'PATH systems below. The programs still enjoy natural light carried from over through large ground opportunities in the Mezzanine.
The Oculus NYC's sculptural form is achieved through the modulated duplication of architectural metal ribs which unify the complicated composition, and gives pride and splendor to the building's sub-grade levels and pedestrian walkways. Between the bones, glass allows natural light, a strong mark of wish and vitality, to flooding the facility. Calatrava speaks of light as a structural aspect in the Hub, stating that the building is reinforced by "columns of light." During the night, the illuminated Oculus serves as a lantern in the reconstructed WTC site. On September 11th of each year, along with on temperate spring and summertime days, the Oculus's operable skylight opens to create a cut of the New York air to the creating, similar to the Pantheon in Rome.
