Beloved Adam,

I adopted a-1 year-old female dog in regards to a year ago. I have 2 cats who was raised with dogs and like dogs. When my dog first arrived, the first few days she was subdued-- being in a new surrounding - however she wanted to play tough with the cats... which did not set too well using them.

The cats work and once we attempt to have them all within the same room together when watching TELEVISION, and so on she chases. I have been keeping them split up with child gates (the dog in the kitchen and the cats in family room) and don't allow dog around until both cats are external. Canine eventually ends up spending too much time within the limits of the kitchen with this process.

Will there be a method to show her that we do not want her rough-housing using the cats so they can all be together in the same place when I am present? The e-collar looks good but so costly. Perhaps a cheaper solution? Thanks. Liked the book!

Dear Willie DeAnne: & Mae

When the cats run, they are triggering your dog's prey drive. This is natural. However, it's also natural for your dog to defer judgement to his pack leader.

What this signifies is that: You need to act like the group leader.

In other words, if you tell you dog to set down, you must UTILIZE THE TECHNIQUES in the book (moment, reliability and motivation) to keep the dog in a down-stay.

I personally LOVE having cats around when I'm training. What could be more straightforward to evidence your dog around?

Remember, your puppy must remain down BEFORE you give him the 'Have a break'! Demand. If he gets around chase the cats, then you'll need to fix him back in the down position.

If h-e gets up again, it's a sure bet that your corrections lack enthusiasm. (Correct more tightly. Ensure you are becoming slack in the line. In the event the dog's body is going when you correct him, then you're using muscle rather than technique... Maybe not good!)

That you don't need an electric collar. If you are interested in data, you will perhaps require to check up about open in a new browser. Merely a $12 prong collar and a six-foot lead.

Your friends will think you're a master, when you get your dog to keep a down-stay around cats using nothing more than determination, consistency and right moment. Or the lost love child of Sigmund and Roy.

Now when you can only get these darn cats experienced!

That's all for the time being, folks!
